During the Civil War between 1815 and 1821, the Dickson Williams Mansion was erected and served as a seat of administration. This mansion is said to have hosted presidents (Jackson and Polk), famous personalities such as Marquis de Lafayette, Henry Clay, and others during its heyday. While attempting to flee the mansion, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was slain by Union soldiers in the garden.
